Book snob

OK. I admit it. I'm a book snob. I can't read crappy books anymore. I read a few REALLY great books in a row last year and since then, I just can't stomach badly written books. I know it's kind of hypocritical because I'm not a great writer, but what can I say? I'm Judgy McJudgerson.

I'm trying to read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon right now. I started reading the first book in this series because my sisters were raving about it. I couldn't get past the first 50 pages. After a year or so, they insisted that I attempt reading it again. So, after much prodding, I did. And the first book wasn't too bad once I got into it. I kept reading the series and it has gotten progressively worse with each book. Do you know how many times she uses the words "alacrity" and "gooseflesh?" For instance, in Drums of Autumn, the word gooseflesh is used 13 times. In Fiery Cross, alacrity is used 6 times. Someone needs to buy her or her editor a thesaurus. *sigh*

But I digress. The other problem that I'm having lately is that all the good books I've read lately are either sad or traumatic. I just finished a book about the Holocaust. Very well written. Heart-wrenchingly traumatic. To the point that every night while reading this book, I dreamed I was in Auschwitz. That kind of book stays in your soul and doesn't let go.

Now, I'm looking for a new book to read that's well written, but also... *gasp* dare I say it???... HAPPY. I have yet to find one. I don't know if they exist. I hate not having a good book to read.

Life is tough if you're a book snob.

  1. Bless your heart...you need to learn how to be a book slut like me:) I read the good, the bad, the classics, the smut...I read it all and try good ol' fashioned "willing suspension of disbelief"....sometimes it works and sometimes, well sometimes I still get disappointed.
